Sometimes the symmetry of things calls for a response… In May 2006 he played what turned out to be Laughing Gravy’s final gig. He was approaching his 53rd birthday and, having been born in 1953, decided this might be a propitious time for a change of direction. He hung up his guitar, packed his CDs and tapes of half-finished songs into the under-drawings, lit a fat cigar and waited to see what happened. Poetry happened.
All summer long he wrote and into the autumn - his intention being to wait for a year, review what he had written and, if he thought it had any merit, submit some for publication. As things turned out one evening in November, he got a little drunk and sent some off anyway. Within a few weeks he had three poems accepted. More followed. He has since been published, regularly, in the U.K. the United States, Canada, Ireland and Australia. His third book, The Naming Of Things Against The Dark, has just been released. Things happen. Fences fall. Sometimes he gets e- mails from Gravy fans asking: "What are you up to?" Sometimes he gets e- mails from people who have read his poetry asking: "Who is this Laughing Gravy"? Hence this website. |
